First-time nominee Yih-Fen Chou is regarded as a key driving force in opening up new horizons for Chinese-language children’s literature. From endangered albatrosses to declining traditional music, overlooked topics have long been at the heart of her creative work. Thanks to her ten years of persistence, traditional Chinese music written for children has made its way onto the stage of the Golden Melody Awards. Her picture book The Story of Grandma Snowflower—based on her mother’s life experiences—addresses 1949, a year that the children’s book world has largely avoided. By reinterpreting that turbulent era through the lens of family love, the book was not only selected for the German White Ravens list and awarded the BIB Golden Apple, but also touched readers around the world with a story from Taiwan.

At a time when foreign titles dominated the market, Chou founded a children’s book publishing house and committed herself to original works. Her Mimi picture book series has sold over one million copies and has been licensed in 14 languages, becoming the first Chinese-language picture books to be introduced in Finland and Denmark.
